年寄りの冷や水

今朝のNHK連続テレビ小説『花子とアン』をみて大変感動した。主人公の花子がブラックバーン校長のお別れのスピーチを全校生徒の前で以下の通り通訳する場面。日本語はなんと奥深いのであろう。そしてさらに英語には日本語ではまず使われない表現力があることに感心させられた。この演説の第２節にそれが良く表れていて欧米文学の気高さを感じる。
「花子」役の吉高由里子およびブラックバーン校長役のTordy Clarkの名演技が光る。

My girls!

Grow old along with me,The best is yet to be.

わたしの愛する生徒たちよ
我とともに老いよ　最上のものはなお後にきたる

If some decade later,
you look back on your time with us here
and you feel that these were the happiest days of your life,
then i must say your education will have been a failure.

今から何十年後かにあなた方がこの学校生活を思い出して、
あの時代が一番幸せだった、楽しかったと心の底から感じるのなら、
わたしはこの学校の教育が失敗だったと言わなければなりません。

Life must improve as it takes its course.

Your youth you spend in preparation
because the best things are never in the past, but in the future.

人生は進歩です
若い時代は準備のときであり、
最上のものは過去にあるのではなく将来にあります

I hope that you pursue life,
and hold onto your hope and your dream
until the very end of the journey.
